He was interested in many different things. He studied math, nature, and how living things work. He also spent time as a soldier in the cavalry. Later, he became a leader in many science groups in Europe. He was the director of the Académie des Sciences in Paris. He also led the Prussian Academy of Science in Berlin. His life was full of big ideas and many adventures.

One of his biggest jobs was finding the true shape of the Earth.

In the 1730s, scientists had a big argument about this. Some thought the Earth was long like a football. This shape is called a prolate spheroid.

Others thought the Earth was squashed at the top and bottom. This shape is called an oblate spheroid. In 1736, Maupertuis led a mission to a cold place called Lapland. He measured the Earth there to settle the fight. His work proved the Earth is actually squashed.

Maupertuis also discovered a very important rule in math.

This is called the principle of least action. It says that nature follows paths that use the smallest amount of action. He showed how this works with light. When light moves from one thing to another, it bends. He found that light takes a path that minimizes action. He also used this idea to study how objects move and rest.

He was also a pioneer in studying how life works. He thought that parents pass certain traits to their children. This was an early idea about genetics. He believed that both mothers and fathers contribute to a child. He also thought that life might change over long periods of time. This helped lead to later ideas about how species develop. He looked at how many living things change in a group. His ideas were very new for his time.

His life was not always easy or calm.

He often had arguments with other famous people like Voltaire. In 1740, he went to Berlin and was even taken prisoner during a battle. He lived through a large war between France and Prussia. These events made his work and his reputation very difficult. Even with these hard times, he kept searching for the truth. He died in Basel in 1759 after a long life of discovery.
