"text": "Pierre Louis Maupertuis was a prolific French mathematician, philosopher, and man of letters. Born in Saint-Malo, France, to a family of merchant-corsairs, he received a private education in mathematics from Nicolas Guisnée.

After a brief period serving in the cavalry, he moved to Paris to build a reputation as a mathematical and literary wit. He was admitted to the Académie des Sciences in 1723. His career was marked by leadership roles in major scientific institutions. He served as the director of the Académie des Sciences and was the first president of the Prussian Academy of Science. \n\nOne of his most famous achievements involved determining the true shape of the Earth. In the 1730s, a major scientific debate existed between rival mechanical systems. Jacques Cassini used astronomical measurements to argue that the Earth was a prolate spheroid, which is shaped like a football.

Conversely, Maupertuis used the theories of Isaac Newton to predict the Earth was an oblate spheroid, meaning it is squashed at the poles.

To settle this, King Louis XV sent Maupertuis to lead the French Geodesic Mission to Lapland in 1736. He aimed to measure the length of a degree of arc of the meridian. His successful results essentially settled the controversy in favor of the oblate shape.

\n\nBeyond geography, Maupertuis is credited with discovering the principle of least action. This principle suggests that in all natural phenomena, a quantity called \"action\" tends to be minimized. He expressed this as an integral equation describing the path of a physical system. For Maupertuis, action was the product of a body's mass, the distance it traveled, and its velocity.

He applied this concept to several different areas of physics. In 1741, he showed that systems of bodies at rest tend to reach positions that minimize changes in action. In 1744, he demonstrated that the refraction of light follows a path that minimizes action. Finally, in 1746, he showed that point masses also minimize action.\n\nHis mathematical work also addressed the vis viva controversy. This debate concerned the behavior of bodies during collisions. Cartesian and Newtonian physicists argued that point masses conserved momentum and relative velocity. However, Leibnizians argued they also conserved \"live force,\" or vis viva. This quantity was defined as the product of mass and the square of velocity. Maupertuis used his principle of least action to bridge these ideas. He showed that his principle applied to both \"hard\" and elastic bodies. This was significant because the conservation of live force was previously considered inapplicable to incompressible, hard bodies.\n\nIn the realm of biology, Maupertuis was a pioneer in the study of heredity and genetics. He published works that explored how organic matter possesses a self-organizing intelligence. He proposed a theory of pangenesis, suggesting that particles from both the mother and father are responsible for a child's characteristics. He also treated biological variations as statistical phenomena.
