Pierre Louÿs was a famous Belgian writer and poet. He was born in Ghent on 10 December 1870. Later, he moved to France to live and work. He loved the culture of ancient Greece very much. He even changed his name to "Louÿs" in 1890. He did this to show his love for Greek culture.

This change included pronouncing the final "s" in his name. He spent much of his life in Paris. He studied at the École Alsacienne while living there. He even became friends with the famous writer André Gide.

Louÿs wrote many different kinds of books. He wrote poems and stories about ancient times. One of his most famous books is "The Songs of Bilitis." He published this collection of prose poems in 1894. At first, he told people he was just a translator. He claimed the poems were written by an ancient Greek woman. Later, people found out that Louÿs wrote them himself.

Even after this, people still loved the poems. They liked his beautiful and kind way of writing. The poems were divided into three different parts. These parts were called Bucolics, Elegies, and Epigrams.

His writing reached many different people through art. The composer Claude Debussy loved his work. Between 1897 and 1898, Debussy made music for three poems. These songs use a voice and a piano. One song is called "La Flûte de Pan." Debussy also wrote piano pieces called "Six épigraphes antiques." These were made in 1914 for a recital.

Many other artists also drew pictures for his books. Famous illustrators like Willy Pogany made art for him. Some of his novels were even turned into movies. The movie "That Obscure Object of Desire" is based on his work.

One of his biggest successes was a novel called "Aphrodite." He published this book in 1896. It tells a story about life in ancient Alexandria. This book sold 350,000 copies during his time. That was a huge number for a French author.

Because of his writing, the French government gave him awards. He first became a Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur. Later, he was named an Officer of the same group. These are important honors for people in France.

Louÿs stayed a writer until the very end. He died on 4 June 1925. Even while he was very sick, he kept writing. His work still matters to people today. In 1955, a group in America named itself "Daughters of Bilitis." They chose this name because of his famous poems.

His stories about ancient life still fascinate readers. He showed the world a very special way of looking at history. People still find beauty in the words he left behind.
