Pierre Louÿs was a famous writer and poet. He was born in Belgium in 1870. Later, he moved to France to live. He loved the culture of ancient Greece. He even changed how he spelled his name to show this love.

He wrote many books and poems. One of his most famous works was called "The Songs of Bilitis." In this book, he wrote poems about a woman from ancient times. He told people he was just translating them. Later, people found out he wrote them himself. People still love these poems today. They liked his beautiful and kind way of writing.

His stories often moved into other kinds of art. A composer named Claude Debussy made music for his poems. These songs use a voice and a piano. Other artists made drawings for his books. Some of his novels were even made into movies. One book, "Aphrodite," was a very big success. It sold 350,000 copies. This was a huge number for that time. He received awards from the French government for his writing. He worked on his poems until the very end of his life.
