Verlaine's writing works by using the magic of language. He focused on musicality and the way words flow. He used clever wordplay and many different meanings for words. His poems often used metaphors to describe things. He also liked to use light and dark ideas. He believed poets should avoid being too sharp or harsh. Instead, he thought a poem should be a happy occurrence. He used repeated sounds to create a special rhythm. This helped his readers feel the emotion of the poem.
