He traveled to England in 1883 to see how they taught sports. He studied the methods used by Thomas Arnold at Rugby School. Arnold was a head teacher who used athletics to teach character. Coubertin believed that playing sports taught people about fair play. He thought sports could help build both a strong mind and a strong body. He even wrote a book about English education in 1888. He wanted French schools to follow these same healthy ideas.

To make his dream of the Olympics real, Coubertin worked very hard.

He worked to bring different types of people together through sport.

A man named William Penny Brookes had also worked to promote athletic contests. Brookes started local competitions in England many years earlier. In Greece, the Zappas family used their wealth to help the games. Evangelos and Konstantinos Zappas funded projects to restore old stadiums. Coubertin worked with the Greek government to use this legacy. This help led to the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. Coubertin also helped start the International Olympic Committee to run the games.
