It sits between the Atlantic Plain and the Blue Ridge Mountains. This area stretches from New York in the north to central Alabama in the south. The name comes from a French word. It actually comes from an Italian word meaning "foothill." This means the land is at the foot of the mountains.

The land here is made of many different rocks. These rocks are very old and mixed together. Long ago, there were huge mountain chains in this spot. Over a long time, wind and water wore them down. This process left behind rolling hills. Most of these hills are between 200 and 1,000 feet high. The region is about 80,000 square miles in size.

Geologists study how this land was made. They see at least five big events in its history. One event was the collision of continents to make a supercontinent. Another event was the formation of Pangaea. Later, North America and Africa began to pull apart. This created large basins that filled with sediment. These basins are found mostly inside the Piedmont today.

Many people live in this region. Big cities sit on the Atlantic Seaboard Fall Line. This is where the land rises up from the coast. This spot makes rivers stop being easy to sail. Because of this, many inland ports were built there. You can find the Atlanta area in Georgia here. The Piedmont also covers the Baltimore and Washington areas.

The Piedmont is also a place of nature and music. The soil is often like clay. People have grown crops like cotton and tobacco here. Much of the land is now covered by pine and hardwood woods. In the late 1800s, a new music style began here. It is called Piedmont blues. It was shaped by many types of music like ragtime and country.
