The Piedmont is a large region in the Eastern United States.

It sits between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Atlantic Plain. The land stretches from New York down to Alabama. The name Piedmont means "foothill." This comes from a word that means "at the foot of the mountains."

The land has many low, rolling hills. These hills are not very tall. Most are between 200 and 1,000 feet high. Long ago, huge mountain chains were here. Over time, wind and water wore them down. This left behind many different kinds of rock.

Many people live in this region. You can find big cities like Atlanta in Georgia. The Piedmont also covers the area near Washington, D.C. Many cities sit on the "fall line." This is where the land rises up from the coast. This spot helps rivers form ports for ships.

The soil is often like clay. In some places, people grow tobacco or cotton. Much of the land is now covered by woods. You can also find many towns and cities.

The area is also known for Piedmont blues music. This music style began there in the late 1800s.
