Philippi was a very important city in ancient Greece.

It was located in the region of East Macedonia and Thrace. The city sat near the Aegean Sea and at the foot of Mount Lekani.

Long ago, the city was called Crenides, which means "Fountains." It was built near a large marsh that sat on a plain. This location was very special because it sat on a major path. This path helped people travel between different parts of Macedonia.

Control of the city changed how it worked over time. In 356 BC, King Philip II of Macedon took over the city. He renamed it Philippi and built strong walls to protect it. He also had people drain parts of the marsh nearby. The city became very wealthy because of gold mines at a place called Asyla.

Later, the Romans built a large road called the Via Egnatia through the area. This road connected the city to many other places. The city became a place where many soldiers lived and worked.

History shows that many famous people visited or fought here. In 42 BC, a big battle took place on the plain near the city. Mark Antony and Octavian Caesar fought against Brutus and Cassius.

After the battle, the Romans turned the city into a colony. They called it Colonia Iulia Philippensis. They built it to look like a "miniature Rome." It had its own laws and leaders sent from Rome. This made the city feel very much like the capital of the Roman Empire.

Philippi was also a very important place for early Christianity.

An apostle named Paul visited the city around AD 49 or 50. He traveled with friends like Silas and Timothy. Paul is believed to have preached on European soil for the first time here. He helped a woman named Lydia join the faith. Because of Paul, the city grew many large and beautiful churches.

Some of these buildings were as grand as those in big cities like Constantinople.

Hard times eventually caused the city to change forever. An earthquake hit the area around 619 AD. This event was very hard on the city and it never fully recovered. After many years of different rulers, the city was eventually left empty.

Today, people visit the ruins to learn about the past. The site is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means it is a place that is protected for the whole world. You can still see the old theatre and the large stone ruins today.
