The story is a tragedy set in the royal court of Troezen. This city was on the coast of Southern Greece. The plot follows Phèdre, the wife of King Thésée. She struggles with a very strong and secret love for her stepson, Hippolyte. Hippolyte is the son of Thésée from a previous marriage. He is actually in love with a princess named Aricie. The characters must deal with many difficult and heavy emotions. These feelings lead to a series of very sad events for the royal family.

Racine took his ideas from ancient Greek mythology.

He used stories that were already told by Greek and Roman poets. One famous poet named Euripides wrote a play called Hippolytus. Another writer named Seneca wrote a play called Phaedra. Racine chose to change some parts of these old stories. For example, he has Phèdre die on the stage at the end. This is different from the version by Euripides. This choice gives the character time to explain what happened.

There are many important people in this drama. Thésée is the King of Athens and the husband of Phèdre. Phèdre is the daughter of Minos and Pasiphaë. Her mother, Pasiphaë, was once cursed by the goddess Aphrodite. Hippolyte is the son of Thésée and Antiope, the Queen of the Amazons. A nurse named Œnone tries to help Phèdre with her secrets. A tutor named Théramène looks after Hippolyte. These characters all play parts in the difficult events of the play.

Because the story is so powerful, many artists have used it.

It shows how a single story can travel through many different cultures and times.
