sports Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The PGA Championship is a major golf tournament. It is one of four big contests for men. This event is special because it is only for professional players. Pros work hard to win this big prize.

Winning brings many great rewards. The winner gets a large amount of money. They also get the Wanamaker Trophy. This trophy was named for Rodman Wanamaker. He gave it to the game long ago. The winner keeps a small version of the trophy. They must return the big one each year. Winning also helps a player's career. They get to play in other big games for five years. They can even play in this game for life.

In the past, the game was played differently. It used to be a match play event. Now, players use stroke play. They play 18 holes each day for four days. This started in 1958. The tournament used to be in the late summer. Now, it is played in May. This change helps because the weather is cooler. It also helps the golf season run well.

The first PGA Championship was in 1916. Jim Barnes was the very first winner.
