PGA Championship

sports Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The PGA Championship is a major golf tournament for professional players. It is one of four huge men's championships. This event is unique because it is only for pros. Most other major golf events allow amateur players to enter. The PGA Championship focuses on those who play golf for a living. Winning this event brings huge rewards for a player's career. Winners get to play in other major tournaments for five years. They can even play in the PGA Championship for their whole lives.

Players compete using a system called stroke play. This format started in 1958 after many years of match play. In the old match play style, players could play 200 holes in one week. Now, players play 18 holes each day for four days. This usually happens from Thursday to Sunday. The tournament used to be played in the late summer. Since 2019, it has been held in May. This change happened because the May weather is cooler. It also helps the golf season stay organized.

History shows how the tournament grew from small beginnings. In 1894, there were only 41 golf courses in the United States. Two unofficial championships were held that year in Rhode Island and New York. These early events caused much debate among players. This led to the creation of the United States Golf Association. Later, in February 1916, the PGA was formed in New York City. A man named Rodman Wanamaker hosted a lunch to help start it. This meeting at the Wykagyl Country Club is called "The Cradle of the PGA."

The very first PGA Championship took place in October 1916. It was held at the Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, New York. The first winner was a man named Jim Barnes. He won $500 and a gold medal with diamonds. Today, the prizes are much larger. In 2018, the prize money was $11 million for the 100th edition. The winner also receives the Wanamaker Trophy. This trophy was also donated by Rodman Wanamaker. Winners keep a small replica of it forever.

Many different places have hosted this big event over the years. New York has hosted it thirteen times. Ohio has hosted it eleven times, and Pennsylvania has hosted it nine times. Most of the games happen in the eastern United States. However, it has traveled to other places too. In 2020, it was played at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco. This was the first time the event visited the Bay Area. It was also the first time it was played in the Pacific time zone since 1998.
