To win a season title, players must master a special system called the FedEx Cup. This system began in 2007 to keep the season exciting. Players earn points during the regular season from January through mid-August. The top 125 players then move into the playoffs. These playoffs consist of four separate events. The number of players shrinks from 125 to 100, then to 70, and finally to the top 30.

The person with the most points at the end wins the season championship.

The roots of this tour go back to April 10, 1916. This was when the Professional Golfers' Association of America was first formed. Many famous tournaments like the U.S. Open were already happening back then. In 1968, the touring professionals decided to become a separate organization. They wanted to manage their own money and tournament venues. They were originally called the Tournament Players Division. The group officially adopted the name PGA Tour in 1975.

Many legendary golfers have made their names on this tour. In 1945, Byron Nelson won 18 tournaments in a single year. He even won 11 of those in a row. Another star, Sam Snead, won a record 82 career tournaments. During the 1960s, Jack Nicklaus won 30 titles while Arnold Palmer won 43. Later, Tiger Woods became a massive star by winning 57 of his 82 career titles.

The tour connects to many other global golf traditions. For example, the Open Championship in the UK is the oldest tournament in the world. It started in 1860 and became a PGA Tour event in 1995. The tour also shares the spotlight with the LPGA Tour for women. Sometimes, players compete in team events like the Presidents Cup.
