The PGA Championship is a premier annual golf tournament. It is organized by the Professional Golfers' Association of America. This event is one of the four major men's golf championships. The others include The Open, the Masters, and the U.S. Open. It is unique because it is exclusively for professional players. Most other majors allow amateur golfers to compete. The PGA Championship was created to provide a high-profile stage for professionals. At a time when the sport was run by wealthy amateurs, this tournament gave professionals their own space.

Players compete using a specific format called stroke play. This format began in 1958. Before this, the tournament used match play. In match play, finalists could play over 200 holes in seven days. Television broadcasters pressured the PGA to change the format. They wanted more well-known players on the final day. Now, the standard format is 72 holes. Players complete 18 holes per day over four days. This usually occurs from Thursday to Sunday.

The tournament has undergone several scheduling changes. For many years, it was played in mid-August. It served as the final major of the season. In 2019, the schedule shifted to May. It now takes place on the weekend before Memorial Day. This makes it the second major of the season. The PGA cited cooler weather as a reason for this move. Cooler weather allows for more variety in host courses. The change also helps organize the golf season better.

The history of the event is tied to the early days of American golf. In 1894, there were only 41 golf courses in the United States. Two unofficial national championships were held that year. One was at Newport Country Club in Rhode Island. The other was at Saint Andrew's Golf Club in New York. These events caused controversy among organizers. This led to the formation of the United States Golf Association (USGA). In February 1916, the PGA was officially established in New York City. Rodman Wanamaker hosted a luncheon to organize the group. This meeting at Wykagyl Country Club is known as "The Cradle of the PGA."

The first PGA Championship was held in October 1916. It took place at Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, New York. Jim Barnes was the first winner. He received $500 and a diamond-studded gold medal. Today, the rewards are much larger. For the 100th edition in 2018, the purse was $11 million. In 2016, winner Jimmy Walker earned $1.8 million. Winners also receive the Wanamaker Trophy. This trophy was donated by Rodman Wanamaker. The champion keeps a smaller replica of the trophy forever.

Winning the PGA Championship offers significant career benefits. Champions receive automatic invitations to the other three majors. They also get an invitation to The Players Championship for five years. Winners are eligible to play in the PGA Championship for life. They also earn a five-year exemption on the PGA Tour. Additionally, they receive a seven-year membership on the DP World Tour. These privileges provide long-term security for professional golfers.

Many locations have hosted this prestigious event. It is usually played in the eastern United States. New York has hosted it thirteen times. Ohio has hosted it eleven times. Pennsylvania has hosted it nine times. The tournament has also traveled west. In 2020, it was held at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco. This was the first time it visited the Bay Area. It was also the first time it was played in the Pacific time zone since 1998. The tournament continues to visit celebrated courses around the world.
