Its name means "art museum in the earth." It is on Naoshima island in Japan. The architect Tadao Ando designed it. He opened it in July 2004.

The museum is built underground. This helps people think about nature. Even though it is buried, sunlight comes in. This natural light shines on the art. The art looks different at different times. The light changes how you see the works.

You can see many famous works. Claude Monet painted his Water Lilies here. These are oil paintings on cloth. You can also see art by James Turrell. He uses light to make his art. Another artist, Walter De Maria, used gold and wood.

There is also the Chichu Garden. It is a large area with many plants. It has 40 kinds of trees. It also has 200 kinds of flowers. These plants are like the ones in Monet's paintings. Some of the flowers are the same water lilies he painted. Walking in the garden helps you understand his art better.
