Peter Blau was a very important sociologist who studied how people live together. Sociology is the study of how groups and societies work. He wanted to understand why people act the way they do in large groups. He also looked at how small interactions between two people can change a whole country. His work helped make sociology a more scientific subject. He used math and facts to prove his big ideas.

Blau had a special way of thinking called logical deduction. He would start with a big idea about the world. Then, he would make a guess about what should happen because of that idea. He used high-level statistics to test if his guesses were right. He believed that if a theory worked many times, it was a good theory. He focused on both small and large parts of society. This helped him see how tiny actions lead to big changes.

His life began in Vienna, Austria, in 1918. Life became very dangerous for his family as leaders in Europe changed. At age seventeen, he was even sent to prison for speaking out against the government. He had to escape to find safety in new lands. He finally moved to America on a ship called the Degrasse in 1939. He became a United States citizen in 1943. During the war, he even served in the U.S. Army as an interrogator.

Blau became a famous teacher at many great universities. He earned his PhD from Columbia University in 1952. He taught at the University of Chicago from 1953 to 1970. He also taught at Cambridge University in Great Britain. Later, he worked at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He even helped start a school called the Tianjin Academy of Social Sciences in China. In 1974, he was the president of the American Sociological Association.

One of his most famous ideas was social exchange theory. He believed that people interact to get rewards, like love or help. These rewards can be things you can touch, like money. They can also be feelings, like admiration from a friend. He also studied how people move up in social status. This is called social mobility. His ideas about "Blau space" help scientists map how different people fit into society.
