He spent his life studying how people live in groups. This work is called sociology. He also studied different cultures, which is called anthropology. He wanted to understand how communities work. His ideas helped people understand China better. He also helped the rest of the world learn about Chinese life.

Fei learned how to study people through fieldwork. This means going to a place to observe life directly. He studied at Yenching University and Tsinghua University. Later, he went to the London School of Economics. There, he studied under a famous teacher named Bronisław Malinowski. He learned to look at how different parts of a community connect. He wanted to see how culture makes sense to the people living in it.

Fei was born on November 2, 1910, in Wujiang County. His family was educated but not very wealthy. His father, Fei Pu'an, studied in Japan and started a school. His mother, Yang Renlan, also started a nursery school. During his early studies, Fei had a very hard time. While doing research in Guangxi province, he was hurt by a tiger trap. Sadly, his wife, Wang Tonghui, also passed away during that trip.

Fei wrote many important books about his findings. In 1939, he published a book called Peasant Life in China. Another famous book was China's Gentry, which came out in 1953. He also had a big idea about social networks. He said Chinese relations work like circles around a person. As you move further away, the connections become less close. This idea helped explain how Chinese society stays organized.

Life was not always easy for Fei during the mid-1900s. In the 1950s, the government stopped teaching sociology. For many years, Fei was treated unfairly and could not teach. He called these twenty-three years a waste of his life. However, things changed in the 1970s and 1980s. He was allowed to teach again and became a professor at Peking University.

He even helped many villagers earn more money through new industries. He lived to be 94 years old.
