Tuan used a special way to study the world. He looked at how people interact with their surroundings. He used many different tools to help his work. He looked at literature, art, and history. He even studied philosophy and theology. He liked to use stories and descriptions to explain things. He did not want his theories to be too heavy or solid. He wanted them to hover in the background like a helping hand.

His life took him to many different countries. He was educated in China, Australia, the Philippines, and the United Kingdom. He went to University College London and the University of Oxford. He earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees there in 1951 and 1955. Later, he moved to California for more study. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1957.

Tuan held many teaching jobs throughout his career. He taught in New Mexico and Toronto. He was a professor at the University of Minnesota starting in 1968. One of his biggest ideas was about space and place. He thought people feel pulled between two different things. Space is wide, open, and full of potential. A place is a spot that feels secure and grounded. He also believed that language helps create a sense of place. Poems, novels, and myths all help us imagine our world.
