William Hardy McNeill was a very important historian. A historian is a person who studies the past. He had a big idea about how the world works. McNeill's work looked at many different parts of human life. He did not just look at kings or wars. He studied how diseases affect the way people live. He also wrote about how military tools and fighting change society. In 1976, he wrote a book called Plagues and Peoples. This book looked at the impact of sickness on history. He even wrote a book about the human web with his son.

His life began in Vancouver, British Columbia, in Canada. He was born on October 31, 1917. His family moved to Chicago when he was ten years old. He went to the University of Chicago for college. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1938. Later, he earned a Master of Arts degree in 1939. He also studied at Cornell University to earn his Ph.D. in 1947.

McNeill spent a long time teaching at the University of Chicago. He taught there from 1947 until 1987. He was even the leader of the history department for a while. In 1963, he published his most famous book. It was called The Rise of the West. This book won the U.S. National Book Award in 1964. He also won the Erasmus Prize in 1996.

Many people respected his work as a teacher and writer. In 2009, President Barack Obama gave him a special medal. It was the National Humanities Medal. This was to honor his talent as a scholar.
