Pesäpallo is a fast-moving bat-and-ball sport. Many people call it the national sport of Finland.

It is also played in places like Germany, Sweden, and Australia. The game is very similar to baseball. One team tries to score runs by hitting the ball. They must run through the bases to score. The other team plays defense to get the runners out.

This sport is loved for its speed and smart tactics. It requires players to think quickly about every move.

There are many ways to play the game. The pitcher throws the ball straight up into the air. This makes it easier for the batter to hit.

A batter can choose different types of hits. They might use a "näppi," which is a short, spinning hit. They might try a "koppilyönti," which is a high fly hit. A player could even try a "pomppu," a very hard bouncer.

The manager helps the team using a multicolored fan. This fan is used to give important signals to the players.

Lauri "Tahko" Pihkala invented the game in the 1920s. He combined traditional ball games with North American baseball.

The very first game was played in Helsinki. This happened on November 14, 1920, at Kaisaniemi Park. The sport grew very popular over many years. It was even shown as a demonstration sport at the 1952 Summer Olympics. This was a big moment for the game in Helsinki.

A regular game has two periods. Each period has four innings.

The team with the most runs wins the period. If the periods end in a tie, they play a 9th inning. The offensive team has nine batters. They also have three special players called "jokers." These jokers can enter the batting order at any time. Fast runners usually bat first to help move the other players.

Even though it looks like baseball, the field is different. The infield is shaped like a pentagon.

The ball must bounce once in the infield to be a fair hit. If a player hits the ball very high and out of the field, it is a foul. This makes the game very tactical for the hitters. Because the fields are unique, teams often have their own special playing areas. Some fields even have sand or artificial turf instead of grass.
