Imagine you want to build a fence for a backyard garden.

You need to know how much wood to buy for the edge. This measurement is called the perimeter. The word comes from the Greek word perimetros. It combines peri, meaning around, and metron, meaning measure. It is the total length of a boundary that surrounds a shape.

The perimeter tells us the distance around the outside of a flat shape.

Finding the perimeter depends on the shape you are measuring. For a polygon, you just add the lengths of all its sides together. A rectangle has a length and a width. You can find its perimeter by adding the length and width twice. If a shape is equilateral, all its sides are the same length. You can find that perimeter by multiplying the side length by the number of sides.

For a triangle, you can even find a splitter. A splitter is a line that cuts the perimeter into two equal lengths.

Circles are a special case in the world of math. We often call the perimeter of a circle its circumference. To find it, you need to know the diameter or the radius. There is a special number called pi that helps you. Pi is the constant number used to link the circumference to the diameter.

A famous mathematician named Archimedes studied this a long time ago. He used many-sided shapes to get closer to the true perimeter of a circle.

It is easy to confuse perimeter with area. Area is the amount of space inside a shape. A shape can have a huge perimeter but a very tiny area.

For example, a very long and thin rectangle has a large perimeter. However, its area might be very small. In the 5th century, a man named Proclus wrote about Greek peasants. They used perimeters to divide up their fields. But a field's crops depend on its area, not its perimeter.

Math also helps us find the best shapes for certain jobs. This is called the isoperimetric problem. It asks which shape has the biggest area for a set perimeter. The answer is always a circle.

This is why fat drops on broth look like circles. If you only use four sides, a square is the best shape. If you only use three sides, an equilateral triangle is best. Regular polygons are always better at holding area than irregular ones.
