You need to know the distance around the outside. This distance is called the perimeter. The word comes from Greek. It means to measure around.

For shapes with straight sides, the math is simple. You just add the lengths of all the sides.

If all sides are the same length, you can multiply. For a rectangle, you add the length and the width twice.

Circles are a bit different. We call their perimeter the circumference. To find it, you use a special number called pi.

An old thinker named Archimedes studied this. He used shapes with many sides to get close to the truth.

Perimeter is not the same as area. Area is the space inside a shape. A shape can have a large perimeter but a small area. For example, a very long, thin rectangle has a large perimeter. But it might have a tiny area inside. You can even change a shape's edge without changing its area.
