These lines are called sides or edges. The points where sides meet are called vertices or corners. A polygon always has the same number of sides and corners. For example, a triangle is a 3-gon.

Some polygons are simple. This means the sides do not cross each other. Other polygons can cross over themselves. These are called self-intersecting polygons. Some look like stars.

We can group polygons by their looks. A regular polygon has sides that are all the same length. It also has corners that are all the same size. Some polygons are convex. This means they do not cave in. Others are non-convex. These shapes can have parts that point inward.

There are many ways to use polygons. You can find them on a sphere, which is a round shape. You can even find them in three dimensions. These 3D shapes are called polyhedrons.
