A dodecahedron is a shape with twelve flat faces.

The most famous kind is the regular dodecahedron. It has faces shaped like regular pentagons. A pentagon is a shape with five sides. This shape has 12 faces, 30 edges, and 20 vertices. Vertices are the corners where edges meet. A long time ago, a man named Plato studied these shapes. He thought this shape represented the whole cosmos.

Some dodecahedra look like stars. These are called star dodecahedra. They have twelve faces that look like star points. There are three types of these regular star shapes.

You can also find dodecahedra in nature. Some crystals, like pyrite, form a pyritohedron.

This shape has twelve pentagon faces too. But its faces are not regular. Another type is the rhombic dodecahedron. Its faces look like diamonds. These diamond shapes can pack together to fill space.

There are many other ways to make a twelve-sided shape.
