One special kind is the regular octahedron. It is made of eight equilateral triangles. These are triangles where all sides are the same length. This shape has six vertices. A vertex is a corner where sides meet. At each corner, four sides meet. It also has twelve edges.

The regular octahedron is a Platonic solid. This means it is a very special type of shape. It is also the twin of a cube. Other octahedra can look very different. Some are irregular. This means their sides are not all the same. Some shapes might even cross over themselves. We call these non-convex shapes. Some octahedra have more corners. A regular one has six corners. But others can have up to twelve corners. Those can have eighteen edges. There are many ways to build an eight-sided shape.
