A dodecahedron is a special kind of shape. In geometry, it is any solid object with twelve flat faces.

You might know the most famous version. This is the regular dodecahedron. It is made of twelve equal pentagons. A pentagon is a shape with five sides. This shape has 30 edges and 20 corners, which mathematicians call vertices. It is very special because it is one of five Platonic solids.

How do these shapes work? The regular dodecahedron is a convex shape. This means it does not have any parts that cave inward. At every corner, exactly three pentagons meet. One amazing thing about this shape is its paths. You can start at one corner and draw a straight line. You can draw many lines that never hit another corner. These lines will eventually return to your starting point.

People have studied these shapes for a very long time. A philosopher named Plato described these regular solids. He believed they were very important. He thought the regular dodecahedron represented the entire cosmos.

There are also star versions of this shape. These are called star dodecahedra. There are three types of these regular star shapes. They are the small stellated, the great, and the great stellated dodecahedron. They are part of a group called the Kepler–Poinsot polyhedra.

Nature also makes its own dodecahedra. You can find them in crystals. For example, the mineral pyrite can form a pyritohedron.

This shape has twelve pentagonal faces like the regular version. However, the faces are not all the same. The edges are split into two different lengths. There is also a shape called a tetartoid. This shape can be found in the mineral cobaltite.

Another type is the rhombic dodecahedron. Its twelve faces look like diamonds or rhombuses.

These shapes connect to many other ideas. The rhombic dodecahedron is a space-filler. This means you can pack them together to fill a room perfectly.

Some dodecahedra are even related to cubes. You can turn a cube into a pyritohedron by changing its edges. There are millions of different ways to make a twelve-sided shape. Scientists say there are over six million different types of convex dodecahedra. Each one has a different arrangement of faces and corners.
