Some words can be unkind. These are called pejorative words. A pejorative word shows a low opinion of someone. It can show a lack of respect. People may use these words to show anger.

Words often change their meaning over time. This is called pejoration. This happens when a kind word becomes a mean word. The word silly is one example. Long ago, silly meant a person was happy. Now, it means a person is foolish.

Other words can change in a good way. This is called melioration. The word nice is an example. It once meant a person was foolish. Now, it means a person is pleasant.

Sometimes, groups take back words used against them. This is called reclamation. They use a mean word in a new way. This can help them feel pride. One example is the word queer. It was used as a mean word. In the 1990s, groups began using it as a positive word. However, some people still feel uncomfortable with it. This shows how words can be hard to use.
