It sits where the Pearl River flows into the South China Sea. Official documents call it the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area. Scholars often describe it as a megacity due to its immense scale. It is one of the wealthiest areas in China. It stands alongside the Yangtze River Delta and Jingjinji in importance. This region is a megalopolis. It forms the southern end of a larger chain of cities. This chain includes major centers like Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Macao.

The geography of the delta is shaped by three major rivers. These are the Xi Jiang, the Bei Jiang, and the Dong Jiang.

The delta actually consists of two alluvial deltas. These are separated by the core branch of the Pearl River. The Bei Jiang and Xi Jiang converge in the west. They flow together into the South China Sea. The Dong Jiang flows into the Pearl River proper in the east. The land is flat and criss-crossed by many water paths. These paths are called distributaries and tributaries. The Xi Jiang shows delta-like traits as far west as Zhaoqing. Major cities like Jiangmen and Zhongshan sit in the western section.

After the economy was reformed and opened, investment flooded the area. Many Hong Kong manufacturers moved their operations into the delta. This movement fueled startling economic growth. In 2003, Hong Kong companies employed 11 million workers here. The region is now part of a special economic zone. This zone is known as the Pearl River Delta Economic Zone. It is one of the most dynamic areas in China. It has grown much faster than the national average.

The United Nations once estimated the population at 120 million. This makes it the largest urban area in the world. The economy is also incredibly large. By 2019, the GDP reached US$2.0 trillion. This is roughly the same size as the economy of Canada. The region contains many diverse cities. Shenzhen has over 17 million people. Guangzhou has more than 18 million people.

The entire region is covered by railway and high-speed rail. Huge bridges also connect the cities. The Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge is among the longest in the world. These links help integrate the cities and facilitate trade. They make the many parts of the delta work together.

The region also has a deep connection to the global Chinese diaspora. In the 19th and 20th centuries, many people emigrated from the west side of the delta. They moved to the Western world and formed many Chinatowns. This includes people moving to the US, Canada, and Australia. The traditional language of the region is Cantonese. However, Mandarin has become a lingua franca recently. This is due to many migrant workers moving to the area. This movement helps drive the continued growth of the region. The delta remains a central part of the global economic system.
