The city's relationship with the West changed significantly in the 19th century. For a long time, it was the only Chinese port open to Europeans. However, the British captured the city during the First Opium War. This meant Guangzhou no longer held a trade monopoly. As a result, it lost some trade to ports like Hong Kong and Shanghai. Despite this, it remained a major entrepôt, which is a trading center where goods are imported and exported.
