A major driver of this wealth is the Pearl River Delta Economic Zone. This area is a Chinese megalopolis that serves as a core for high-tech industry, manufacturing, and international trade. Within this zone, the cities of Guangzhou and Shenzhen play critical roles. Shenzhen was the first special economic zone in the country.

Guangdong has a deep history that stretches back to the Neolithic era. Around 7,000 years before the present, early human activity began in the Pearl River Delta.

In the north, the Shixia culture existed between 2650 and 2250 BC. Originally, the region was inhabited by tribal groups known as the Baiyue. The area first became part of China during the Qin dynasty. Later, during the Han dynasty, the province served as a gateway for western traders. These merchants traveled from as far away as the Roman Empire.

The name "Guangdong" has specific linguistic origins. The term "Guang" means "wide" or "vast." This name has been associated with the region since the creation of Guang Prefecture in AD 226. The name refers to Guangxin, an outpost from the Han dynasty. The name Guangxin came from an order by Emperor Wu of Han to "widely bestow favors and sow trust." During the Song dynasty, the region was divided into two parts. These were Guǎngnán Dōnglù and Guǎngnán Xīlù. The names Guangdong and Guangxi are abbreviations of these older terms. "Dōng" specifically means "east."

Cultural influence from Guangdong has spread far beyond its borders. The outward movement of people has shared Cantonese, Hakka, and Teochew languages and traditions.

Several historical figures and events are tied to the province. Sun Yat-sen, the founder of the Republic of China, was born here.
