Zhuhai is a major resort city located in southern China.

It sits on the west bank of the Pearl River estuary. The city is on the east shore of Zhongshan Island. This area is part of the Pearl River Delta in Guangdong province. Its name literally means "pearl sea." This name comes from its location where the Pearl River meets the South China Sea. Many people call the city the "Chinese Riviera" because it is a top tourist destination. It is also classified as a Medium-Port Metropolis.

The geography of Zhuhai is defined by its relationship with the water. The city has a long coastline and includes 217 islands. Many of these islands are quite large. For example, 147 islands have an area over 500 square metres. Some islands stay close to the mainland. These are often connected by bridges or causeways. Examples include the Hengqin, Qi'ao, and Yeli Islands.

Other islands sit far out in the open South China Sea. These are known as the Wanshan Archipelago. Some of these islands are actually closer to Hong Kong than to the Zhuhai mainland.

Zhuhai has a unique climate because of its location. It is within the tropics but has a humid subtropical climate. This climate is shaped by the East Asian Monsoon. The South China Sea also helps moderate the weather. The city experiences long, hot, and humid summers. These summers often bring frequent thunderstorms. Winters are usually short, mild, and dry. Because of the sea, extreme heat waves do not occur as they do further inland. Frost has never been recorded in the city centre, and snowfalls are unknown.

The economic history of Zhuhai changed significantly in the late 20th century. The city was officially established in 1979. In 1980, the government of the People's Republic of China named it one of four special economic zones (SEZ). An SEZ is a place where the government provides special incentives for business. Zhuhai's location next to Macau was very strategic. This allowed the Chinese economy to access global markets through Macau. This status helped Zhuhai become a major city in the Pearl River Delta. Foreign investment in the city reached US$10.344 billion in 2008.

Today, Zhuhai is a center for many high-tech and heavy industries. The local government focuses on five main sectors. These include electronics, computer software, biotechnology and pharmacy, machinery and equipment, and petrochemical industries. The city also has several specialized economic zones. The Zhuhai High-Tech Industrial Development Zone is located near the downtown area. This zone is a showcase for scientific development. The company Meizu is a high-tech product headquartered here.

Another area is the Zhuhai Free Trade Zone, which was founded in 1996. This zone encourages industries like telecommunications equipment and medical supplies.

Zhuhai is also a global leader in manufacturing specific goods. It is a massive center for printer consumables. The city manufactures and supplies 70 per cent of the world's ribbons. It also produces 60 per cent of the world's aftermarket inkjet cartridges. Additionally, it makes 20 per cent of the world's third-party laser toner cartridges. The combined sales for these products are worth more than 1.3 billion US dollars. This represents 10 per cent of all global sales. The city maintains a complete supply chain for these materials locally.

Transportation in Zhuhai connects it to the rest of the world. The Zhuhai Jinwan Airport serves as an international hub.

This is the largest built-up area in the world. As of the 2020 census, this region had more than 65,565,622 inhabitants.
