Schilling is most famous for his work with the electrical telegraph. A telegraph is a tool that sends messages using electricity.

He worked with an inventor named Samuel Thomas von Sömmerring in Munich. Sömmerring was making an electrochemical telegraph. Schilling improved this by making an electromagnetic telegraph. His design used small needles that hung from a thread. These needles sat over a coil that carried an electric current. When the current moved, the needles would point to different spots. This allowed people to send messages using a system called binary coding. This way of using two signals meant he needed fewer wires.

Schilling's journey into science began while he was working in Munich. He met Sömmerring there and learned about electricity.

During the Napoleonic wars, he even brought a telegraph to show the Russian Tsar. He was a soldier during the war against France. He fought in several battles and won awards for his bravery. One award was called the Golden Weapon for Bravery. After the war, he returned to his work in Saint Petersburg. He used his skills to help the Russian government in many ways.

He had many other important jobs during his life. Schilling set up a special print shop in 1816. He used a method called lithography to print maps and reports.

Sadly, Schilling died before the big project could be finished. He suffered from health problems for many years. He was buried at the Smolenskoye Lutheran Cemetery.

His assistant, Moritz von Jacobi, took over his work. Jacobi used Schilling's ideas to build the first working telegraph lines in Russia. Today, we use similar ideas for our own digital messages.
