Paul Pimsleur was a man who studied how we learn to speak. He was a linguist and a scholar. A linguist is someone who studies languages. He wanted to know how people pick up new ways of talking. He was very interested in how children learn. Children speak new languages without knowing any formal rules. He called this special way of learning "organic learning."

His work helped many people learn to communicate. He wanted to make the learning process easier for everyone. This makes his life story very important to teachers today.

To learn how people learn, Paul used many different methods. He studied groups of children and adults. He even studied people who spoke many languages. He looked at the psychology of learning. This means he studied how the mind works during study. He also built a special Listening Center at Ohio State University. This was a huge language laboratory.

People used automated tapes to learn. They could listen to prompts over the telephone. This allowed them to study at their own pace.

Paul grew up in New York City. He lived in a place called The Bronx. His father, Solomon, was a music composer from France. His mother, Miera, worked as a librarian at Columbia University. Paul went to school at the City College of New York. Later, he went to Columbia University for more study. He earned a master's degree in psychological statistics. He also earned a PhD in French.

He spent his life studying the sounds and meanings of words.

Paul worked at several famous universities. He taught at UCLA and Ohio State University. He was also a professor at the State University of New York at Albany. In 1968 and 1969, he was a Fulbright lecturer in Germany. He helped start a group called ACTFL. This group helps people teach foreign languages. Paul also created the Pimsleur Language Aptitude Battery, or PLAB.

This test uses three things: verbal intelligence, hearing ability, and motivation. He found that hearing ability is very important for success.

His ideas changed the way the world teaches languages. He founded the Pimsleur Language Programs. His partner, Charles Heinle, helped grow these courses. A company called Simon & Schuster Audio bought them in 1997. Today, many people still use his methods to learn. An award for research is even named after him. It is called the ACTFL-MLJ Paul Pimsleur Award.

He passed away in France in 1976. His work lives on in classrooms everywhere.
