Bob Perelman

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Bob Perelman is a famous American poet and teacher. He is well known for his work in a movement called Language poetry. This group started in the San Francisco Bay Area around 1970. These writers wanted to try new things with words. They did not follow the usual rules of poetry. They often avoided writing about a single person's feelings. Instead, they focused on how language itself works. This style was very different from the popular poetry of that time.

Perelman's writing is very adventurous and bold. He uses many different forms to share his ideas. Sometimes he writes essays or dramatic monologues. Other times he uses carefully measured verse. He has published more than 15 volumes of poetry so far. His poems can look at how people use power in the world. They can also mix old styles with new ideas. One of his poems, "China," became a famous example of his style.

Bob's journey into literature was quite long. He was born in 1947 to Mark and Evelyn Perelman. He first wanted to be a concert pianist. He studied music at the University of Rochester. Later, he decided to focus on classical literature instead. He moved to Iowa City in 1969 to study at the Iowa Writers' Workshop. He earned a Master of Fine Arts there. He also studied Greek and Latin at the University of Michigan. Finally, he earned a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley.

Perelman has spent many years teaching students. He is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He has taught many interesting subjects. These include the sound of poetry and American poetry. He has also taught at King's College in London. He wrote two important books about literary criticism. His book "The Trouble with Genius" looks at famous writers like Gertrude Stein. Another book, "The Marginalization of Poetry," was published by Princeton University Press.

Writing can be a way to connect the past to the present. Perelman does this by looking at history through his poems. He uses humor and irony to make his points. His work explores how people use information and technology. He also writes about how art and academia work together. He lives with his wife, Francie Shaw, who is an artist. He dedicates each of his books to her. His life shows how a love for words can lead to many adventures.
