Helen Vendler was a famous American writer and teacher. She spent her life studying the art of poetry. She was a literary critic, which means she studied and explained great writing. Her main goal was to understand how poems are built. She used a special way of working called "close reading." This meant she looked at a poem from the view of a writer.

She wanted to see how every word worked together. This helped her find the deep meaning in many different poems.

Vendler's way of studying was very careful and detailed. She did not just read a poem once. She looked at how poets used language to share feelings. She studied many different writers from long ago to the modern day. These included Shakespeare and George Herbert. She also looked at modern poets like Wallace Stevens and Seamus Heaney.

By looking closely, she could explain why a poem was special. This skill made her one of the best experts in her field.

Her journey to becoming a scholar had many steps. She was born on April 30, 1933, in Boston, Massachusetts. Her parents encouraged her to read poems when she was a child. At first, she studied chemistry at Emmanuel College. She even won a Fulbright Fellowship to study math in Belgium.

However, she decided she wanted to study English instead. She worked very hard to learn English quickly. She finished her Ph.D. in English and American literature in 1957.

Vendler taught at many famous universities throughout her long career. She taught at Cornell University starting in 1960. She also worked at Boston University and Haverford College. Later, she became a professor at Harvard University.

Some people at Harvard were not welcoming to women at first. One department chair even said they did not want women there. But Vendler stayed strong and became a very important leader. She held many high titles, like the A. Kingsley Porter University Professor.

Because she was so skilled, she helped many poets succeed. She was a judge for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. These are very big honors in the world of books. In 2006, a newspaper called her the leading poetry critic in America.

She wrote many books about poets like Emily Dickinson and John Keats. Her work helped people see how much art matters to our lives. She passed away on April 23, 2024, at the age of 90.
