Michel Thomas was a man who could speak many languages. He was a polyglot, which means he was fluent in several tongues. He spoke Polish, English, French, Spanish, Italian, German, and Yiddish.

He believed that learning a new language was the most alien thing a person could do. Because of this, he wanted to make it easier for everyone. He created a special way of teaching called the Michel Thomas method. His goal was to help students speak with confidence very quickly. He even thought his way of teaching could change the whole world.

His teaching method works by making the classroom feel stress-free.

Thomas believed that there are no students with learning difficulties. Instead, he thought only teachers have teaching difficulties. He focused on three important parts of learning. First, he analyzed the material very carefully. Second, he organized the information so that easy skills came before hard ones. Third, he found the best way to show these skills to his students. He taught people to use what they already knew to understand new patterns. This helped students learn how to correct themselves as they spoke.

Thomas had a very brave and difficult life during World War II.

He was born in 1914 in Łódź, Poland, to a wealthy Jewish family. During the war, he joined the French Resistance to fight the Nazis. He used the name Michel Thomas to hide his true identity. He was arrested several times and spent time in concentration camps. After he was released, he worked for the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps. He served as a scout and an interpreter without being paid. He even helped capture many people who had committed crimes during the war.

One of his most important jobs happened in Germany near the end of the war.

He found a warehouse filled with mountains of Nazi documents. These papers were meant to be destroyed at a paper mill in Freimann. Thomas and his team protected these files from being turned into pulp. The files included membership cards for over ten million people. Later, prosecutors used these documents as evidence during the Nuremberg trials. In 2004, the United States Army gave him the Silver Star. This award was for his gallantry in action while serving in France.

After the war, Thomas moved to Los Angeles in 1947.

He opened the Polyglot Institute in Beverly Hills to teach his method. His students included famous celebrities and important diplomats. His school became so successful that he opened a second one in New York City. He also made many books and audio tapes for people to use at home. By the time he died in 2005, his recordings were very popular in the United Kingdom. His life showed that even after hard times, one can find a way to help others grow.
