People enjoy these stories because they are so big and wild. They have become a major part of American and Canadian folklore.

Many of these stories explain how the world was made. One famous idea is that Paul and Babe created the 10,000 lakes of Minnesota. They did this simply by leaving giant footprints in the ground.

Other tales say he made the Grand Canyon by dragging his heavy axe. Some stories claim he built Mount Hood using stones from his campfire. Even Lake Bemidji is said to look like a giant footprint from above. These stories turn nature into a map of his adventures.

Long ago, these stories were not written in books. Instead, they were part of an oral tradition. This means loggers told them out loud in their bunkhouses. These early stories were often short fragments. They sometimes included fearsome critters or very bad weather. The first time his name appeared in print was in 1893. That mention was in the Gladwin County Record. It was likely just an inside joke for local people.

In 1916, a writer named William B. Laughead changed everything. He wrote a pamphlet for the Red River Lumber Company. This helped make Paul Bunyan a famous character for everyone. Laughead gave the blue ox the name "Babe." He also made Paul much larger than in the old stories. In the original tales, he was just very tall and strong. Laughead made him so huge that he towered over entire trees.

Today, Paul Bunyan is part of many different kinds of art. You can see him in cartoons and movies.

He even appears in musical shorts made by Walt Disney Studios. There are also huge statues of him across North America. Some people argue about where he truly came from. Some thinkers call him "fakelore" because he was popularized by ads. Others wonder if he was based on a real man named Fabian Fournier.
