Many stories began as spoken tales. Loggers shared them in their camps. Later, a writer named William B. Laughead made him very popular. He wrote ads for a lumber company in 1916. Laughead made Paul even larger than before. He said Paul was so tall he towered over trees.

Some tales say Paul made the land. One story says his footprints made the lakes in Minnesota.

Another story says he made the Grand Canyon. He did this by pulling his axe behind him. Some say he made Mount Hood with his campfire.

People have different ideas about his start. Some think he was a real person. Others say he is a made-up character. Even so, many people love his stories. You can find big statues of him across North America.
