A parashah is a section of a holy book.

It is part of the Hebrew Bible. These sections help people find new ideas. They act like a pause. This is a lot like a paragraph.

There are two main types of parashah. One type is called an open portion. An open portion starts on a new line. The other type is a closed portion. A closed portion has a space in the middle of a line.

These spaces help the reader. Sometimes they highlight a special verse. They can also separate items in a list.

People have used these breaks for a long time. We see them in the Dead Sea Scrolls. A thinker named Maimonides made a list of these parts. He used the Aleppo Codex to help him. His rules are used by many people today. In some groups, a mistake in these breaks is a big deal. It can even make a Torah scroll invalid. This is because the breaks are a very important part of the text.
