Pandemic is a famous cooperative board game. This means all players work together as one team. They do not compete against each other to win. Instead, the group must cooperate to save the world. The players face a big challenge involving four different diseases. Each disease threatens to wipe out a specific region. The main goal is to find cures for all four diseases. If the team finds the cures in time, they win. However, there are several ways the players can lose the game.

Playing the game involves many careful steps and decisions. The game board shows a map with 48 connected cities. Each player starts at Atlanta, the home of the Centers for Disease Control. Players take turns performing up to four different actions. They can move between cities or build research stations. They can also use cards to discover new cures. During a turn, players draw cards that can cause an outbreak. An outbreak happens when a city gets too many disease cubes. This can cause a chain reaction in nearby cities.

Matt Leacock designed this game starting in 2004. He wanted to make a game that brought people together. He noticed that competitive games sometimes caused tension during game nights. Leacock based the game on the SARS outbreak from 2002 to 2004. He first published the game in the United States in 2008. Since then, it has become a very successful game. It is much faster and easier to learn than older cooperative games. It allows a wide range of people to play together.

There are many different ways to play and expand the game. Players can choose from seven different roles in the second edition. These roles include the Medic, the Scientist, and the Dispatcher. The Medic can treat diseases very quickly in a single city. The Scientist needs only four cards to find a cure. There are also expansions like On the Brink and In the Lab. These add new roles, special events, and even a fifth player. Some expansions even add a fifth disease called Mutation.

Pandemic has grown into a large family of different games. One famous version is called Pandemic Legacy. This version uses an ongoing story that changes the game permanently. As you play through different months, the board and rules change. Another version is Pandemic: Contagion, where players act as the diseases. There is also a dice-based version called Pandemic: The Cure. These spinoffs show how much people enjoy the original idea. The game remains a popular way to practice teamwork and strategy.
