This dinosaur had a very thick head.

The Pachycephalosaurus was a very special dinosaur.

Pachycephalosaurus was a unique dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous period.

This dinosaur is famous for its thick skull. It had a large bone dome on top of its head. This dome could be up to 9 inches thick. The dome helped protect its brain. The skull also had bony knobs and small spikes. These spikes were likely blunt rather than sharp.
As the dinosaur grew, its head changed. Young dinosaurs had flatter skulls with large horns. As they got older, the horns shrank. At the same time, the dome grew larger. Some scientists think it used its head like a battering ram. They compare it to how bighorn sheep head-butt each other today.
Scientists found fossils in Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota. They also found them in Alberta. Pachycephalosaurus could grow up to 15 feet long. It might weigh about 1,000 pounds.

The most amazing part of this dinosaur was its skull. It had a huge bony dome on top of its head. This dome could be up to 9 inches thick.

Scientists have spent a long time studying these bones. In 1872, Joseph Leidy named a bone fragment Tylosteus ornatus. Later, in 1931, Charles W. Gilmore named the species Pachycephalosaurus wyomingensis. In 1943, Barnum Brown and Erich Maren Schlaikjer established the genus Pachycephalosaurus. They used more complete fossils to name the group. They also named a second species called Pachycephalosaurus reinheimeri.
We know a lot about where these dinosaurs lived. Fossils have been found in Montana and Wyoming. They were also found in South Dakota and Alberta.

Pachycephalosaurus is a genus of herbivorous dinosaur from the Pachycephalosauria clade. Its name comes from Greek words meaning "thick-headed lizard."

The most striking feature of Pachycephalosaurus is its specialized skull. It possessed a large, bony dome on the top of its head. This dome could reach a thickness of 9 inches.

Scientists have different ideas about how this animal used its head. One hypothesis is that the skull acted like a battering ram. This theory suggests the dinosaur used its head for defense or intra-species combat. This behavior would be similar to modern bighorn sheep or muskoxen. In those animals, males charge and head-butt to establish dominance. However, this idea has been disputed by researchers in recent years.
The anatomy of the rest of the body is based on related species. Pachycephalosaurus was a bipedal animal, meaning it walked on two legs. It had long, strong legs and a bulky body. It also had a heavy tail, which was likely kept rigid by ossified tendons. Its arms were relatively short with five-fingered hands.
The history of discovering Pachycephalosaurus is quite complex. In 1872, Joseph Leidy named a bone fragment Tylosteus ornatus. He thought it was the armor of a reptile. Later, Charles Whitney Gilmore identified it as a dinosaur in 1928. In 1943, Barnaby Brown and Erich Maren Schlaikjer finally established the genus Pachycephalosaurus. They used more complete fossils to do this. They named two species: P. grangeri and P. reinheimeri. Since 1983, scientists have considered those two species to be the same as P. wyomingensis.
Researchers also study how the dinosaur changed as it grew. This process is called ontogeny.

Finally, Pachycephalosaurus is part of a larger family tree. It belongs to the Marginocephalia group. This means it was likely more closely related to ceratopsians than to ornithopods. The Pachycephalosauria clade includes many relatives like Stegoceras and Homalocephale.
