Outsider art

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Outsider art is a special kind of art made by people who are self-taught. These artists do not go to art school or follow traditional rules. They often have very little contact with the official art world.

Some people call this work "art brut," which is French for "raw art." This name was created by a French artist named Jean Dubuffet in the 1940s. He believed this art was very precious because it came from pure, creative impulses. These artists do not worry about winning prizes or becoming famous. They simply create from their own unique perspectives.

Creating this art often happens in very personal ways. For some, it is a way to find calm or express deep feelings.

One artist, Adolf Wölfli, used drawing to stay calm while living in a hospital. He created a massive, imaginary life story through his work. His project included 25,000 pages, 1,600 illustrations, and 1,500 collages. This shows how much detail an untrained artist can produce. Other artists might create "visionary environments." These are large spaces like decorated houses or sculpture parks.

Examples include the Watts Towers or the Palais idéal.

Interest in this type of art grew during the early 1900s. Doctors and artists began looking at work made by children and people in hospitals. In 1921, Dr. Walter Morgenthaler wrote about the artist Adolf Wölfli. Later, in 1922, Hans Prinzhorn published a famous study called "Artistry of the Mentally Ill." This book included thousands of examples from across Europe. It caught the attention of many famous artists like Paul Klee and Max Ernst. These artists were part of new movements that wanted to try different things. They looked for power in art that was not "sophisticated."

There are many different names used to describe these works. The term "outsider art" was officially coined in 1972 by Roger Cardinal. Some people use the term "visionary art" for works with spiritual themes. Others use "intuitive art" as a general name for self-taught work.

You might also hear the term "folk art." Folk art is often different because it usually follows traditional community styles. Outsider art is more about being on the edge of mainstream culture. Even musicians have a special name for their work called "outsider music."

Today, outsider art is a recognized part of our culture. There is an annual Outsider Art Fair held in New York since 1993. You can also find special journals that talk about these artists. Many important collections exist around the world. The Collection de l'art brut is kept in Lausanne, Switzerland. It was started by Jean Dubuffet and contains thousands of pieces. Some museums, like the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, focus on this art. These places help us celebrate the skill of people who see the world differently.
