Gibson had a new way to make mandolins. A mandolin is a small string instrument. Most mandolins had flat backs. Gibson carved his instruments from wood. He made the tops and bottoms curved. This shape is like a violin. He even carved the sides from one block of wood. These new parts made the instruments loud. They were also very strong.

Musicians loved his work. They wanted more than he could make alone. In 1902, he started a company in Michigan. The Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Mfg. Co., Ltd. was formed. The company made many guitars and mandolins. One famous model was the F-5 mandolin. It was made with help from Lloyd Loar. Loar was a designer and a sound engineer. He added f-holes to the instruments. These are holes shaped like the letter f.
