One day, a shipment of gold watches arrived at his station. A local jeweler did not want them. Richard saw a chance to make money. He made a deal to keep any profit above $12. He sold the watches to other agents on the railroad. People needed watches to keep track of time. Soon, Richard moved to Minneapolis. He started the R. W. Sears Watch Company. He was very good at writing ads. He spoke directly to people living in small towns.

In 1887, he moved his business to Chicago. He hired a man named Alvah Roebuck. Together, they started a big company in 1891. They sent out a large catalog to 300,000 homes. It sold many things like clothes, tools, and bicycles. They even sold homes through the mail! Richard knew what farm families needed. He retired in 1908 and died in 1914.
