In 1887, he moved his business to Chicago. He hired a man named Alvah Roebuck. Together, they started a big company in 1891. They sent out a large catalog to 300,000 homes. Richard Warren Sears was a famous American businessman.

Richard learned how to work with railroads early in life. In 1880, he worked as a telegraph operator in North Branch, Minnesota. Later, he became a station agent in North Redwood Falls. One day, a shipment of gold watches arrived at his station. A local jeweler named Edward Stegerson refused to take them. This was a common scam used by sellers at that time. Richard saw a way to make money from this mistake. He made a deal to keep any profit over $12. He sold the watches to other agents for $14 each.
People needed these watches because of new changes in travel. Railways were growing very fast across the country. New time zones meant that farmers and railroads needed accurate time. Within six months, Richard earned $5,000 from the watches. He moved to Minneapolis to start the R. W. Sears Watch Company. He was very good at writing ads for his business. He wrote directly to people in small towns and farms. These ads encouraged them to buy things through the mail.
In 1887, Richard moved his company to Chicago. He lived in a place called Oak Park, Illinois. He hired a repairman named Alvah Curtis Roebuck. In 1891, the two men co-founded Sears, Roebuck and Company. The company grew very large and sent out a 500-page catalog. This catalog went to 300,000 homes by 1897. It sold many things like clothes, plows, and bicycles. They even sold houses through the mail-order catalogs!
Richard knew what farm families needed because he grew up on a farm. He also knew how to use railroads to ship goods to far places. In 1895, he sold half the company to Julius Rosenwald. Richard retired in 1908 at the age of 44. He moved to Lake Bluff, Illinois, but his health was failing. He died in Waukesha, Wisconsin, in 1914. His birthplace in Stewartville is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
Richard Warren Sears was a prominent American businessman who changed how people bought goods.
Sears began his career working with the railroad system. In 1880, he worked as a telegraph operator in North Branch, Minnesota. He later became a station agent in North Redwood Falls, Minnesota. His path to business success began with an unexpected shipment of gold watches in 1886. A Chicago manufacturer sent a shipment to a local jeweler named Edward Stegerson. However, Stegerson refused the shipment because he had not ordered it. This was a common scam used by wholesalers at the time. They would ship unwanted goods and then offer them at a lower price to avoid shipping costs. Stegerson was savvy and refused to fall for the trick.
Sears saw a different opportunity in this situation. He made an agreement with the wholesaler to keep any profit he earned above $12 per watch. He then offered these watches to other station agents along the railroad line for $14 each. These watches were seen as symbols of urban sophistication. Additionally, the growth of railways and the new application of time zones created a high demand. Farmers and railroad workers needed to keep accurate time to stay on schedule. This demand helped Sears sell the watches quickly. Within six months, he had earned $5,000 from this single venture.

In 1891, when Sears was 28 years old, the two men formed Sears, Roebuck and Company. The business grew rapidly, but it faced financial challenges in 1895. The company was short on cash, and Roebuck had left the business. To help, Sears sold half of the company for $75,000.00. The buyers were Aaron Nusbaum and his brother-in-law, Julius Rosenwald. On September 7, 1895, the company was incorporated in Illinois as Sears Roebuck & Co. of Illinois. Rosenwald eventually became the President of the company after Sears retired.
The company became famous for its massive mail-order catalogs. The very first catalog was published in 1893 and featured only watches. By 1897, the company had expanded its offerings significantly. Customers could order men's and ladies' clothing, plows, silverware, bicycles, and athletic equipment. The catalog grew to 500 pages and was sent to approximately 300,000 homes. Sears was uniquely successful because he understood his customers. Having been raised on a farm, he knew what rural families needed. His experience with railroads also helped him master shipping goods to remote areas. In 1908, the company even began selling mail-order homes.
Richard Sears retired in 1908 at the age of 44. He moved from Oak Park to Lake Bluff, Illinois. Unfortunately, his health began to fail due to alcoholism. He passed away in Waukesha, Wisconsin, in 1914 from Bright's disease. Despite these personal struggles, his business legacy remains significant. He was inducted into the Junior Achievement U.S. Business Hall of Fame in 1892. Today, his birthplace in Stewartville is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
