In 1978, a man named Edward Said wrote a book.

The book is called "Orientalism." It looks at how the West sees the East. The East includes North Africa and Asia. Said argued that Western stories often show the East in a bad way. These stories make the East look weak or strange. They also make the West look better and more powerful.

Said said these ideas were used to gain power. For a long time, Western nations ruled many Eastern lands. This is called colonialism. Writers used old ideas to justify this rule. They claimed to know the East better than the people living there. This was not true. Many of these stories were based on fiction, not real life.

Even old art showed these views. Said wanted people to think about how power and knowledge work together. He hoped for a world where everyone could tell their own story fairly.
