Many languages use words that mean "sunrise" to name the east.

In the past, the word had many meanings. It once described parts of the Roman Empire.

As people traveled further into Asia, the meaning shifted. It moved east toward the Pacific Ocean. This area is often called the "Far East."

Today, the term is often seen as old or unkind. In the United States, some people find it offensive. They prefer to use the word "Asian" instead. Some laws even use the word "Asian American" now.

You might still see the word in other ways. Some people use it to talk about rugs. It is also used for some food shops in Britain. In some places, it simply means a part of a country that sits in the east.
