The Old Catholic Church is a name for several groups of Western Christians. These groups believe they are keeping the old traditions and teachings of the church. They chose to separate from the See of Rome after a major meeting. This meeting was called the First Vatican Council, which took place from 1869 to 1870. Many people in these groups disagreed with new ideas about the Pope. Specifically, they did not accept the idea of papal infallibility. This is the belief that the Pope cannot be wrong about matters of faith.

To understand how this works, we can look at their history. Some of these groups actually started much earlier than the 1870s. In the Netherlands, some members had already separated from the Pope in the 1700s. They did this after their bishop, Petrus Codde, was removed from his position. The Diocese of Utrecht then began to elect its own leaders. This made the church in that area independent from the Pope's direct rule. Over time, these different groups joined together to form larger unions.

The movement grew much larger after the First Vatican Council. A man named Ignaz von Döllinger helped lead many people in Germany and Austria. These followers joined with the bishops in Utrecht to form the Union of Utrecht. This union helped them stay connected as they practiced their faith. They made some big changes to how they worship. For example, they stopped using Latin in their prayers. By 1877, they used local languages instead. They also decided that priests did not have to stay single.

There are two main groups that people talk about today. The first is the Union of Utrecht, which has members in many places. You can find their churches in Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Austria. They are also in Poland and the Czech Republic. The second group is the Union of Scranton. This group was started in 2008 by the Polish National Catholic Church. They left the Union of Utrecht because they had different views. They did not agree with allowing women to be priests or blessing same-sex marriages.

Today, the Old Catholic movement is quite large around the world. According to a 2020 database, there are about 4,896,000 Old Catholics in total. Some of these people are part of the Union of Utrecht. They are connected to other groups like the Anglican Communion. Other people are part of the Union of Scranton or are Independent Old Catholics. Even though these groups have different rules, they all share a common history. They all look back to the traditions of the early church.
