Old Believers are groups of people who follow ancient religious traditions.

They belong to many different communities. These people want to keep the old ways of the Russian Orthodox Church. They do not want to use the new rules made in the 1650s. These changes were started by a leader named Patriarch Nikon. He wanted Russian prayers to look more like Greek ones. But many people felt these changes were wrong. They decided to keep their own old rituals instead. This split created a large group of people called Old Believers.

There are many specific ways these followers practice their faith.

One famous difference is how they make the sign of the cross. They fold two fingers together to do this. They also use a special eight-pointed cross. When they baptize people, they use full immersion in water. This means the person goes completely under the water. They also use a special prayer mat called a podruchik. Their music and art look very different from other churches too.

This movement started because of a big disagreement in history.

Between 1653 and 1656, the church rules were changed. Many people thought these changes were a sign of the end of the world. Some believed the new leaders were not acting right. Because of this, the government treated them very harshly. Many Old Believers had to flee to find safety. They moved to remote areas or to other countries. They wanted to live away from people who did not share their views.

Old Believers are divided into different types of groups.

Some groups are called "priestly" because they have priests to lead them. Others are called "priestless" because they do not use priests at all. These priestless groups choose other leaders to help them. In the past, many people lived in large cities. By the early 1900s, there were between 10 million and 20 million followers. Later, many people left their homes during the Stalin era. This caused many followers to move to the West.

Today, the Old Believer tradition is still very much alive.

There are over one million people who follow these traditions. They live in many different places around the world. Many live in Russia and other parts of Europe. You can also find them in the United States. They still wear traditional clothes like long coats or special head coverings. They keep their old customs even in a modern world. Their history shows how much people value their heritage.
