Nurses focus on protecting health and helping people function well. They work to prevent illness and injury for their patients. They also help people heal and ease their suffering through a compassionate presence. Nurses often work in teams with doctors, therapists, and families. They create plans of care to improve a person's quality of life. In many places, nurses make up the largest part of healthcare teams.

They might also coordinate the care given by other medical providers. Nurses do more than just treat sickness, though. They also educate the public about wellness and how to stay healthy. This helps people take better care of themselves every day.

Providing care has a very long and varied history.

In ancient times, people like the Hippocratic attendants provided care. In India around 600 BC, texts described the importance of knowing anatomy. During the Middle Ages, monks and nuns often provided nursing-like care. This religious tradition influenced how modern nursing works today. However, the profession faced a hard time during the Reformation. When monasteries closed in Europe, nursing care was lost for about 200 years.

Florence Nightingale changed nursing forever during the 19th century.

Other pioneers like Mary Seacole also used herbs and hygiene to help soldiers. In the United States, Linda Richards became the first professionally trained nurse in 1873.

Today, nursing is a global profession that faces new challenges.

Many countries have a high demand but not enough nurses. A 2022 survey found that many nurses in several countries might leave their roles soon. They say they want safe environments and a good work-life balance.

While nursing was once seen as a job for women, it is now gender-neutral. This means people of all genders can become nurses. Whether in a hospital or a school, nurses remain essential to our world.
